Word: Removing Items from the Work Menu

Removing Items from the Work Menu

In the last Hot Tip we showed you how to add the Work menu to Word so that you can quickly get to documents you use regularly, but not necessarily recently.

We were soon asked "How do you remove something...?" because it's not obvious.

The technique you need, is very powerful, so you need to use it with care.

  1. Display the Destructive Cursor by pressing [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[-]. The mouse pointer should then change to a short horizontal bar. Use the [Esc] key if you want to return to the normal mouse.
  2. Use the Destructive Cursor to firstly click the Work menu and then the entry you want to remove. The entry will be deleted from the menu and the mouse will change back to normal automatically.

Be careful with the Destructive Cursor, because it will delete ANY menu command it clicks on. The loss is not permanent, however. You can use customize mode to either return the accidentally deleted command, or Reset the menu bar to the default set-up.
